NAWBO IOWA MEMBER Q&A: Emily Schultz

Emily Schultz is the senior director of publishing and operations at Business Publications Corporation. BPC publishes the Business Record, dsm magazine and several other ancillary publications.

Please tell us about your background.

I grew up in Eastern Iowa (Marion, to be exact). I went to Drake University briefly before transferring to New York University. After nearly a decade in New York and another 5 years in Chicago, I returned  to Des Moines with my family ... and we love it here! I currently live in Waukee with my husband, two boys and two naughty dogs.

Please tell us about your business.

I work at Business Publications Corporation, the parent company of the Business Record and dsm magazine. We are getting ready to celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2023 - and what a ride it has been! Connie Wimer started the Business Record nearly 40 years ago, and expanded to include dsm and, at one point, Cityview. After selling Cityview, dsm and Business Record remain our core products. Our mission is to inform, inspire, elevate and celebrate our communities through the power of communication, connections and recognition.

Why did you join NAWBO Iowa and what do you appreciate about it?

I joined NAWBO Iowa as part of my role at BPC. What I appreciate most about my role with NAWBO is the incredibly supportive community of women entrepreneurs that I can interact with. At each NAWBO event, I am greeted with kindness and curiosity. It is truly a group of women working to help other women succeed, and that is the kind of group I want to be a part of.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love solving problems. Printing prices going up? Let’s increase our digital presence. A client is cranky? Let’s work with them to get to the bottom of the issue. A product is no longer viable? Let’s try a new product we can introduce to the marketplace. No day is ever the same, and I get to meet new people all the time. It’s super interesting to learn from other people in their careers and think of how I can bring that back to what we do at BPC.

What are you most looking forward to in 2023?

I am looking forward to school starting again! My youngest is starting kindergarten and my husband works from home ... so that means that we don't have to keep paying for daycare!
