NAWBO IOWA MEMBER Q&A: Dorene MacVey

Dorene MacVey is the founder and head coach at ithrive31, a coaching and personal development company based in Des Moines.

Please tell us about your background.

I grew up in Iowa but have also lived briefly in Columbus, Ohio. For most of my career, I have worked in two large global companies. I led the organization development and training function at AB Electrolux for seven years. I also held leadership roles in the human resource field and ethics and business compliance functions at Collins Aerospace in Cedar Rapids for 21 years.

In 2017, I left my corporate role and opened my own business for coaching and personal development, based in Des Moines. The name of the company is ithrive31®.

I have been married to my husband for 35 years and have two grown children.

Please tell us about your business.

ithrive31® is a growing, innovative coaching and personal development company that integrates a business-oriented and human-centered approach. We work with organizations and individuals to make a positive impact through one-on-one and group coaching, workshops, and custom-designed coaching solutions.

Our business operates through a network of professionally skilled coaches who form a Coaching Collective. These coaches are located in multiple locations and provide services under the common brand, ithrive31®. Our unique coaching is built on three pillars: Well-being, Accountability and Results. Coaching is aimed at helping individuals reach their full potential both at work and at home. Each coach runs their own business while contributing to our collective brand.

At ithrive31, we provide turnkey business solutions, expert guidance, tailored marketing support, and weekly accountability meetings, all within a fun and supportive environment.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love learning, growing, and stretching myself in new areas. I love the challenge and creativity of the entrepreneur space.

I also love my field. Professional coaching is essential in today's workplaces and society. In a world where individual isolation is increasing, fostering human connection and personal acceptance is more important than ever.

Why did you join NAWBO Iowa and what do you appreciate about it?

I joined NAWBO because I valued the support, encouragement, friendship, and collaboration they provide. These are women who genuinely care about each other, celebrating both their business successes and their personal accomplishments. It's educational, enjoyable, and uplifting to spend time at NAWBO events and with NAWBO women.

What does NAWBO mean to you?

It's friendship, support and encouragement. When I moved to Des Moines and started my business seven years ago, I didn't have many professional friends. I went to a NAWBO meeting and knew these were some incredible women.

What are you most looking forward to in 2024 and beyond?

Growing my business and expanding into new markets. I look forward to seeking out new coaches who want to join our amazing Coaching Collective.
