NAWBO IOWA MEMBER Q&A: Melissa Young Szalay

Melissa Young Szalay is a physician and the owner of Timeless Youth MD, a medical spa in West Des Moines that specializes in facial aesthetics and injections.

Please tell us about your background.

I grew up in Columbus, Ohio. I went to undergrad at the University of Pittsburgh, then medical school at Ohio State University, and did my orthopaedic surgery residency at Ohio State Medical Center. I did a hand and microsurgery fellowship at The State University of New York at Buffalo. I worked as an orthopaedic hand surgeon for 21 years throughout Akron, Ohio; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Des Moines, Iowa. I medically retired from hand surgery in June 2021.

Please tell us about your business.

I own a small medical spa, which I initially opened in February 2019. There were unexpected contract issues with my orthopaedic group, so the first year of my business was rocky. In January 2020 I re-opened in my current location, inside a Sola Salon in West Des Moines. I initially worked part-time, as I was still a full-time hand surgeon. In June of 2021, I retired from hand surgery and turned all of my attention to my small business. I perform all procedures, including dermaplaning, peels, microneedling, platelet-rich plasma, Botox, fillers, and other injectables. I provide concierge service in a non-intimidating atmosphere.

Why did you join NAWBO Iowa and what do you appreciate about it?

I'm a new member. I joined to have the opportunity to network with other women business owners in the community and state. It's been an elucidating experience learning to be an entrepreneur. I'm sure I didn't know what I was getting myself into when I first started my business five years ago! I would love to learn from others, and perhaps bring a unique perspective to the group with my background.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

I love interfacing with clients and collaborating to create an individualized aesthetic plan. I enjoy the procedural nature of aesthetics, allowing me to utilize my motor skills and creativity.

What are you most looking forward to in 2024?

I want to continue to grow my business and create long-term relationships with my clients. I always look forward to continuing my education and will continue to do so in 2024.

What does NAWBO mean to you?

I'm still learning the answer to that question, but I hope it means networking with like-minded women!
