NAWBO IOWA MEMBER Q&A: Alexson Calahan

Meet Alexson Calahan, founder of Small Adventures Communications,

Portrait of Alexson CalahanPlease tell us about your background.
I'm a St. Louis native who came to Des Moines by way of Drake. I spent the first 15 years of my career leading public relations for health-based non-profits including the American Heart Association.

Please tell us about your business.
In 2021, I launched Small Adventures Communications. We are a boutique PR firm working with introverted business leaders and science-based non-profits to tell memorable and actionable stories in the media. Our specialties include crisis communications planning, media training (especially for leaders who don't normally love the spotlight!), and media relations.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?
I love working with folks to share their stories in ways that feel comfortable for them and make a difference to others. In telling personal health stories for my clients and working with business leaders to share their expertise, I bring lived experience and empathy along with my high professional standards to ensure they are truly seen without exposing too much.

Why did you join NAWBO Iowa and what do you appreciate about it?
I joined NAWBO to connect with fellow business owners who are building careers that work for them in pursuing their own definition of balance. Women business owners have unique strengths and challenges, so connecting and learning from each other is key!

What are you most looking forward to in 2025 and beyond?
I'm excited to celebrate the fourth anniversary of Small Adventures Communications. It has been such a powerful force in my life to own my calendar, my income, and the projects I spend time on.

What does NAWBO mean to you?
It's so wonderful to build relationships with business owners who are just starting out as well as those who have more experience. I always enjoy the conversations I have!
