Women Shaping Businesses with Vision and Heart

Owning a business takes courage, creativity, and persistence; and each woman’s journey looks a little different. Some are driven by community, some by a desire to create impact, and some by the simple pull of following their own instincts.

Belief in people and purpose is a common thread.
Kristen Boldt reflects, “I started Harmony Works to help people learn to communicate and collaborate differently, so it is easier to do their big good in the world.” That purpose has been shaped by her own life experiences; she says her cancer journey “showed me the value of community, of what we are capable together.” For her, support isn’t optional, it’s essential.

Finding the right community and mentors can make all the difference.
Gabrielle Vazquez felt the pull to serve her Des Moines community after years of working remotely. “It was the Des Moines women in business that ultimately inspired and motivated me to make the leap,” she says. Alongside a supportive peer during her first months of ownership, Gabrielle learned quickly to prioritize her time and energy. “You’ll never know what you are capable until you try,” she shares.

Speaking up and trusting your instincts are lessons many have learned along the way.
Cheryl O’Hern emphasizes, “Do not be afraid to speak up and give your opinion… You are the only one who will really tell your story and stand up for yourself.Rebekah Brandmeyer echoes this with a focus on support and collaboration: “The biggest support has come from people who saw strengths in me before I fully recognized them myself. Mentors, peers, and clients who trusted me with real problems to solve… learning to ask for help and collaborate instead of trying to do everything alone has been a game-changer.”

Even the act of starting something new can feel daunting.
Sarahpearl Followill’s story reminds us that it’s possible. After more than a decade in her industry, she took the leap to open her own salon. “It happened sooner than I imagined and turned out better than I could have dreamed,” she says. Today, she keeps her perspective grounded as she encourages others, “You deserve success, and if you stay open to it, great things will follow.”

These reflections show that while every path is unique, the challenges, lessons, and triumphs resonate across experiences. As Kristen reminds us, “We need your gifts and talents and ideas and innovations. Speak up, stand up, come to the table, there is plenty of room.”

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women shaping businesses in our community, not only for what they build, but for the courage, authenticity, and heart they bring to every step of the journey.
